Dementia and Alzheimer's Reversal

We are excited to announce the launch of our Memory Protection Program (MPP) for patients and the community! Our innovative physicians, Dr. Burke and Dr. Holthouse, attended the IFM Annual International Conference this past week to delve into the Evolution of Neurology and discussed the profound research and concrete findings that encompasses reversing dementia and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). A disease and illness that has plagued many families and is a constant hot topic in the medical industry to find a solution. The lead speaker, Dr. Dale Bredesen, presented his UCLA founded program, The Bredesen Protocol, based off of his 2014 findings on how nutrition and lifestyle dramatically improved the chances of reversing dementia or Alzheimer's Disease and sustained improvement. He has so far successfully reversed Alzheimer’s symptoms in more than 90% of his participants. That is a far greater percentage of success than any designated Alzheimer's mono drug therapy which only has a maximum of a 10% positive impact on a patient's symptoms while the patient still continues to cognitively decline with no form of sustainable improvement.

Dr. Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. He graduated from Caltech, then earned his MD from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA and the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Bredesen directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding President and CEO. He was the first to suggest that memory loss can be reversed and improvement sustained as confirmed by his 2014 case studies, that are easily readible here on the UCLA Newsroom. As noted in his case studies "Six out of the ten patients had discontinued working or had been struggling at their jobs at the time they joined the study; all were able to return to their jobs or continue working with improved performance, and their improvements have been sustained." As anyone who has witnessed the cognitive decline of a loved one where they're no longer able to function on daily tasks this is unheard of and, yet, it's possible. Dr. Bredesen achieved this reversal through his therapuetic program that consists of diet changes, sleep optimization, exercise, brain stimulation, specific pharmaceuticals and vitamins, and multiple additional steps that affect brain chemistry.

After millions of dollars spent on Alzheimer's research there has never been a drug or monotherapy that has been found to stop or even slow the progression of Alzheimer's. That's because Alzheimer's is a network of molecular interactions, which is why a network approach to treating it is more effective than a single target approach. Being aware of this is also important for preventing Alzheimer's, especially if it runs in the family. Dr. Bredesen compares Alzheimer's to a roof with many holes and explains monotherapy only plugs one of these holes. However, you need to plug several to make a vast improvement in the structure. This approach is utilized in The Bredesen Protocol with a multi-factorial therapuetic approach, identifying the imbalances in each patient individually. If you're interested in learning more about Dr. Bredesen's approach to reversing dementia and Alzheimer's, it's recommended to pre-order his book on Amazon for its release in August.

Dr. Bredesen has certified a select few physicians who have gone through the training to practice The Bredesen Protocol by using the tools only he and his team are able to provide through their homebase, MPI Cognition. Dr. Burke and Dr. Holthouse are certified in The Bredesen Protocol. Our staff including Jessica Santos, FNP, Marc Fierro, PA, Christina LoBou, RDN, and Victoria Wenz, HC, are also trained in the program. Our office is actively accepting dementia and mild to moderate Alzheimer's patients to participate in The Bredesen Protocol, which is named Memory Protection Program (MPP) at True Health Center For Functional Medicine. Additional information on what the MPP program consists of can be seen on our website here. Also, keep an eye out for information on Dr. Bredesen's featured documentary "Good Luck With That" about The Bredesen Protocol to be released nationally August 23.

Almond Flour Pancakes

Pancakes are a favorite morning meal of many, and with the right ingredients can be packed full of protein to keep your energy up through out the day. These pancakes are a delicious combination of almond flour and applesauce topped with fresh berries. Add this into your morning meal rotation and enjoy the fresh berries of the season!

Total Time: 30 minutes

Makes 2 servings

Ingredients

1 cup(s) almond flour

1/2 cup(s) applesauce, unsweetened

1 tablespoon(s) coconut flour

2 large egg(s)

1/4 cup(s) water, (consider soda water for slightly fluffier pancakes)

1/4 teaspoon(s) nutmeg, fresh

1/4 teaspoon(s) sea salt

1 tablespoon(s) coconut oil, divided

1/2 cup(s) berries, fresh

Instructions

Combine almond flour, applesauce, coconut flour, eggs, water, nutmeg and sea salt in a bowl, and mix together completely with a fork. The batter will appear a little thicker than normal mix.

Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat with coconut oil.

Drop 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan once it is fully heated. Spread out batter slightly if desired.

Flip like a normal pancake when the bubbles start showing up on the top, and cook for another minute or two.

Add more oil to the pan and repeat with remaining batter.

Top with fresh berries.

**Feel free to substitute mashed bananas or pureed pumpkin for the applesauce and cinnamon for nutmeg. If you are allergic to almonds, you can replace half the almond flour with coconut flour and the other half with tapioca flour. Cooking these pancakes on a griddle, slowly and over low heat, will give the best results.
